Conversion voice disorder refers to loss of voluntary control of the voice as a result of psychogenic causes. Obvious causes include accident, while hidden causes could be work or interpersonal stress.

Features:

  • Voice problem but with comparatively normal vocal cords
  • Voice problem outweigh the possible damage of the relatively mild vocal cord pathology
Assessment of underlying psychological causes is important. A combination of speech therapy and psychotherapy is effective.
